eggless hokkaido milk bread

there are so many recipes using hokkaido milk to make buns. there’s hokkaido bread, hokkaido chiffon, … hokkaido this and that. i have never came across this milk in the supermarkets i went, so I usually used other fresh milk brands to substitute.

i passed by a japanese shop in Suntec while on the way to totts yesterday and spotted a promo selling 2 litres of hokkaido milk for sgd12. That’s sgd6 for a litre of milk. almost double the price of what I paid for the ones I bought in supermarket.

bought 2 and made bread. verdict – soft and sweet.

no egg bread recipe :

250gm bread flour
30gm cake fluor
30 gm raw sugar
20 gm butter
160gm hokkaido milk
5 gm salt
5 gm milk powder
3/4 tsp yeast

sweet smelling.

bento using Daiso shaker

the Daiso ball shaker was out of stock for a long time when it was first sold. I’ve used it to shape meat balls and buns fillings.

hey you can even shape rice with it just fill rice and shake shake. fill less to make smaller rounded balls.

japanese curry bear bento

Japanese curry bento
Japanese curry bento

It’s been a long while since I made a character bento. Here’s a simple one using a panda mould from daiso, small round and oval cutters for bear muzzle and ear.

in the bento box – Japanese curry premix from daiso, added lots of other vegetables. cauliflowers, mini tomatoes, French beans, carrots and mushroom.

add all ingredients and boiled. yum.

I used to make cute bentos for my kids to bring to school. now the tweens think cute is ugly and uncool. the mommy still thinks kawaii is in. I have to justify all the bento tools invested. 😆

bento 209 – hoot hoot

I am crazy about all things owls at the moment. Wearing and bought t-shirts, rings, necklaces with owls motif only. If there’s an owl on it, high chance I’ll take it home. Soon, this will pass. I hope.

Here is my food owl –

In the box – mee goreng and bread owl.

Hoot hoot!!

Used 2 circle cutters.  Bigger one for the body and wings.  use smaller one to cut its eyes. Easy peasy and most importantly fast!

Cheers!

Poodle Sammy

I had a sammy and fruits for dinner today. Something light because I was still half full from earlier heavy lunch and mooncakes.

Today’s poodle sammy was inspired by this lovely ring of mine.

Here is my take of  that little poodle –

menu: bread, carrots, apples and blueberries. ‘glued’ with nutella.

bento 207 – sleeping panda

we went to river safari zoo last sunday to visit jia jia and kai kai (pandas).

unfortunately Kai kai was sleeping and jia jia was in her den when we were there. So disappointing. 😦

here’s kai kai fast asleep in his dreamland.

there is a panda themed restaurant next to the pandas. I ordered cappuccino because of this cute stencilled latte art.

panda themed water container and red bean pau.

I liked the idea of a specky rice bear but the thought of cutting a small piece of seaweed into a pair of spectacle …hmm..too much work needed.

Hello! …

hello peeps! it’s been another long long pause since my last post in apr2013.

in between then and now : i fractured my wrist, made only a few bentos, made some cute sandwiches and baked for a charity donation drive, still obsessed and buying typewriters and other vintage stuff, got interested in cafe hopping (is it wise to buy an espresso machine just to do latte/coffee art?), started a collection of owl rings and pendants just because they are so cute.

below is a quick recap of the above and more, summing it up with my favourite photos!

image

my right hand was in cast for 6 weeks.

image

baked these (before i fell and fractured my hand) for a charity donation drive.

image

i love hello kitty! trying out fondant for ribbons and flowers. 😉

image

i love my kopitiam kopi and cappuccino but i love latte art more!!

image

my latest typewriter acquisition, a teeny robotic lookalike typer with glass keys.

image

diy manicure with nail stickers. hello kitty ones are my favourite. ;P

image

this is the same watch that tom hank wore in the da vinci code movie (2003). i am  totally in I love this fat-boy, pie-eyed Bradley Mickey watch (vintage, made in 1970s). this one is rare because mickey has purple hands.

i’ve been bitten by the baking bug again lately – this time, chiffon cakes! i had so many failures..sigh… my love hate relationship with chiffon cakes could probably fill a few blog posts! after 20 or more attempts (yes, 20 ~blush~, so if you failed 5 times, press on!!), i have better success rates now. phew! i’ve tried a few recipes but my favourite are  from cuisine paradise and small small baker.

love the soft, light and fluffy texture, recipe is without butter so healthier too! *wink . if only we can make them cute or bake them in hello kitty moulds…that would be soooo cool. hmm…possible? have anyone tried or came across?

image

my chiffon cakes are not the prettiest but i am working hard on it.  i am happy as long as the cake is standing tall and not khatek (collapsed when cooled).

i bought a (another) hello kitty puncher recently, another impulse guilty splurge! i’d like the idea having a hello kitty punched seaweed wrapping my sushi. 🙂

image

made rocket themed bentos per a media company request. they ordered  30 lunch boxes but cancelled the order last-minute.  wasted some effort and time.  a lesson learnt is to request for a deposit first. oh well…

image

image

image

ok, totally random but see how my kids have grown! time really flies… hug and kiss your little ones as much as you can!!

Tgif! Have a great weekend. 🙂

Karen
